So I'm here at the office again on a Saturday. I'd really rather not be here, but since I am the network admin, I kinda have to be. At least when I'm here all alone I can do whatever I want - so I'm on my laptop doing this, listening to music & singing along, all while I wait for things to happen. And it's actually quiet - I won't get interrupted. Though sometimes it's too quiet, and if I'm in the warehouse area, it gets really spooky with the lights off and you hear these random noises.

Haven't done much lately, though we've been debating going downtown Chicago sometime on the weekend soon. I want to go when it is still cool, but probably need to wait a week longer. It can still get pretty chilly downtown with the wind once the sun goes down, and you do need a jacket then. One of the museums has a Harry Potter exhibit, and we might go see that. Otherwise I'd like to go to the Science & Industry museum, but Adam doesn't care for that one.

I think we might go see a movie tonight though. Other than that, I'll be at home.

my week

So I imagine I should post in this thing. That was the idea; starting here at Dreamwidth and trying to actually post more than once a year. Plus, I'm friending all these new people, I should really post something for them to read.

So my week involved working mostly, with a screwed up schedule as I worked 9-6 Monday and then went back in at 1AM. I thought it was safe to do some updating and reboot the servers at the office. While the updates went well, something else broke, and took out the Exchange server. We live on email. People panic/have fits if they don't have email. So in I went. Many searches, cursing, and prayers later, by 6:30 AM it was fixed. At this point, I didn't bother going home. If I went to bed I would have slept through any alarm to come back in. I did leave early (with management blessing) at 11 after checking on things and handling some issues that came in, and slept till 6. Of course, I couldn't go back to sleep that night, and my sleep schedule has been messed up since then.

Other than work, I've been working on my house mostly. We recently finished the 2nd bedroom/office. We repainted the room, and made desks out of Elfa shelving, which works out pretty well, if we want to change it over later into a kids room or something else. We also just replaced the light in the kitchen with one that matches the light in the entry (the 1st floor is mainly open - no walls dividing anything. Other than that, I haven't done much lately - been too cold to do anything. At least now it's starting to warm up, although the rain this weekend isn't helping with that.

5 songs

[personal profile] phoebesmum posted this on her journal

1. Reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. List (and upload, if you feel like it) 5 songs that start with that letter.
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions

I got W.

1. Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves: I suppose you can't get more 80's than this. Total pop, had a good beat, and who couldn't feel happy when listening to this? And all from a song about a woman who was waiting to hear from a guy who loved her. I would imagine anyone could understand this.

2. We Built This City by Starship: A song that I have read was chosen as the worst song of the 80's, having come from a band that evolved from Jefferson Airplane back in the 60's. Members Grace Slick and Paul Kantner were still around, although Paul jumped ship at this point, not liking the way music was going - originally, they wrote songs that made political and/or social statements. Personally, its a good song, and I like it.

3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps by George Harrison: I've only really listened to this song starting a few months ago. I don't really have too much to say about it, but I really like the version that Paul and Eric Clapton did for the Concert for George.

4. Woo Hoo by the 5.6.7.8's : Not much to the song, really. Became popular because of the movie Kill Bill, then Vonage used it for their commercials and drove it into the ground. It's just a fun song, period.

5. White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane: Grace Slick said she wrote this song as a response to parents who were asking why children took drugs. Personally, I just like it.

Well, I imported all of my entries last night. Everything came over fine, it looks like - and quickly! I've gone on a adding spree through the communities, and I need to look and see if any of the LJ people are over here as well that I have friended there. I even redid my profile and tried to organize my interests, but those just go alphabetically, no matter what you do.

So I see people are starting to add me (in one case, for a second time, because I did have my OpenID set up). So Hi, new people! :)

I'd write some more, but it's very nice outside finally - 73 and sunny/cloudy, and its been pretty chilly up until recently (I'm in the Chicago area) and I'm headed outside. If anyone wants to ask questions, go ahead!

I'm voting!

Or waiting to vote, anyway. Despite all I heard about the computer voting machines, the geek in me compels me to vote on them. :) I haven't gotten up to the machine yet, so I'll just hope it isn't made by Diebold. So here I am, waiting in line. The lines are pretty long, but not going outside the building like I heard was happening in some places.

I realized earlier, though, that all the attention was on the Presidential race, and I hardly know anything about the other people I am voting for. Not the best informed voter, am I? Something to work on for the next election.

Also, I noticed that there were people outside handing out flyers for some of the candidates. I thought there was no campaining allowed outside a voting place. I just stuck the flyers in my pocket after a quick glance - they don't really say much.

Anyway, I'm voting!

It's just not as satisfying to hit the mouse button to hang up your softphone as it is to actually slam down the phone receiver when you are irritated over a phone call.

does this thing still work?

yes, I am alive. Cari, you still out there?

Anyone?

I might just start posting more - I have a mobile phone client now.

41 tabs in Firefox. I love having tabs, its great - I don't really need favorites anymore, except for the sites I like and don't visit that often. However, it's getting to the point where a chunk of them won't load, but thats because I have a lot of comics in my tabs, and 90% of them are hosted on Keenspot/Keenspace. Problem is, I have been wanting to add to the tabs - new blogs I've found that I wish to read, and my screen resolution is set to the highest the monitor and card can handle, but the tabs are going off the screen now. What's the best way to handle this - I know many of you use Firefox, and I can't be the only one with too many tabs. :) I have looked through the plugins, but haven't seen anything that looks useful so far.

20 hours in a car with parents and your husband - not the most fun car ride you've ever had. Especially when you can't sleep the whole way, and you are driving straight through. I will hopefully have pictures soon, as soon as I figure out how to get gallery running on my website.

trying this out, just like everyone else. I might actually post more this way, as I can do little thoughts without feeling like I need to post multiple paragraphs or have to bother with opening semagic.

Stolen from someone who stole it from others...

These stats show that the average LJ user is an 18-year-old girl. I have nothing against 18-year-old girls. But there are certain assumptions about teenaged girls, and what they want, and how to market to them. If you're worried about the potential MySpace-ization of LJ and concerned that Six Apart is ignoring the more mature portion of its userbase, here's what you can do:

1) Go to the profile page and specify your full date of birth, including your year of birth. Ifyou don't want everyone to see how old you are, make sure the box that says "show your birthday to other users" is unchecked. The important thing is to get yourself into the database. Do this for any and all LJ accounts you have.

2) Re-post this.
chipb0i: black background, blurry lights, text saying "go then, there are other worlds than these" from Stephen King's Dark Tower (Default)
For starters, I just saw the other day that I haven't updated this thing in 16 weeks, or 4 months, according to what might be the new info page. So I suppose it's time to do the occasional update.

So here I sit, at Borders. This isn't as boring as it sounds, despite the fact that I have spent many a Friday night at a bookstore, simply looking around and being entirely too picky about what authors I will read, seeing as how my current favorite authors are not putting out books fast enough for me, but that's another post, perhaps. Speaking of which, anyone feel free to suggest new authors for me. Cari, I imagine you have at least one for me. :)

So I'm sitting at Borders, typing away on my laptop. And not just any laptop, but my iBook G4. Therefore, I am cool...right? Something about bookstores/coffeehouses where if you have a laptop with wireless, a cellphone (check), and a PDA (whoops - it's in the laptop bag) you seem to be cool. It's like some sort of status symbol or something - "I have a laptop and wireless and I'm at a coffeehouse!" I used to think these types were just snobs, but not quite. Not to say that all of these people are trying to show off or something, because some are legitimately doing classwork, or other things. But some seem to be there just to take up space. You don't see that they purchased anything, but yet they are taking up usable space. Of course, the establishment won't throw them out, as it's a "possible" sale. So anyway, have I gone and joined the same group of people who I previously held disdain for? In a way, yes. However, anyone who knows me well enough knows I'm not a snob (or at least, I don't think I am, and if anyone does, they certainly haven't said anything), and I'm not just using up space - I bought a drink. Actually, it seems to be more out of a sense of wanting to belong. I've had this feeling lately, that I don't belong to a group. My friends are mainly in Texas, but even then, that group has slowly gone away - marriages, moving away, losing touch with others. I don't even feel that I belong with my own age group somehow...which is odd, because I think plenty of people my age are trying to save, get a house, and all that other stuff. So there would be a group of us. So am I trying to "join" some elite group of people who spend all their time in coffee shops/bookstores? Or am I just a impostor, or "poser" as all the cool kids say these days?

Maybe this all stems from not really belonging to a group in high school. Which Adam says I need to get over already. And I don't disagree, but...still I can't let go. Why wasn't I popular? I mean, yes, I had friends, and I appreciate having them and lots of fun was had, though sadly we didn't have the same classes and only met up at lunch and after school. And some of the others in the group were just as unpopular as I was, and we didn't hang out at school, for fear that in our togetherness, we would be even more unpopular or an easier target to be made fun of. So even then, the group I belonged to, wasn't really a group.

At any rate, thats my thoughts...rambling though they may be. I would love to discuss this with anyone, so if you want to analyze me, I'll join right in with you. :)

And now on with the typical stuff.

Wedding Reception, way after the wedding: 3 hours was too short. I think more people enjoyed the chocolate fountain than the party as a whole. Have to admit, the chocolate fountain is pretty nifty. I think I'm going to make it a requirement at any party I have. The party was quite nice, and everyone seemed to have a good time, though it was a day of being very busy. When Adam and I got home, we were feeling like it was 2AM when it was really only 11PM! People were very generous with the gifts. Currently working on thank you notes. We now have to buy a new house to hold everything, which is a shame, because I really wanted to have my espresso machine out and using it, rather than waiting to buy a house. Which is something we were working on already, but will still take like at least another year as we work on credit and down payments.

Work: Busy. Busy. Busy. A good thing. Nothing overly exciting going on, at least not until the summer. So that will appear later on.

And that's about it! Until the next eventful update, anyway.

Ok, so I think this puts me at the longest time that I have been away from LJ - 2 1/2 days, and I had to go to skip=325 to catch up on all the posts. A good chunk of that is from [livejournal.com profile] thequestionclub but still, that's a record for me.

Currently, I am on a vacation - my first real one in a while. I went back to Plano to see the folks and my friends. Adam has come with me, and so I have been able to show him all the places and people associated with my many stories that I have been telling him all this time. So far, we have eaten at a few places that were my favorites, such as Posadas, and the Great Outdoors. Next on the list is Sonic (which is a must, as I am constantly tortured by commercials for Sonic up in the Chicago area, yet I cannot find one listed on the site - I didn't look in the Indiana section of the Sonic website, but I can only guess there is one there or in Wisconsin. /end rant) and Krystal's, which is the southern version of White Castle. Except for the fact that Krystal's has chili cheese pups, which are basically half-size hotdogs. But lord are they good.

Now you might be asking, why am I just going to resturants and such, because isn't there more things to do in the Plano/Dallas area than eat? Yes, there is. But because we are doing this on a limited budget, other things are out of the picture for now. As it is, we are thinking this will turn into a yearly vacation to Texas. Although next time, we are sooo flying instead of driving. Which really wasn't that bad, we made it in 13 hours rather than the 16 that Mapquest was predicting (we also went a little faster than Mapquest calculates the speeds to be).

Now Christmas itself was pretty good. Between the two of us, we got a PSP, KitchenAid mixer, I got some iPod accessories - a car charger and FM modulator, just in time for the trip. Adam got me a bracket for my car that will hold my XM radio and the iPod as well. Various DVD's, including a special edition of Edward Scissorhands, which is certainly one of my favorite movies. We also got a gift card to Pier1, and my little sister got us a card to Williams Sonoma - there is only a few hundred things in there that I could get. :)

And one of the neatest presents I got was Magical Trevor! He's so cute, and while he was smaller than I thought he would be, he looks perfect, just like from the movie. I'll have to get a picture of him and post it.

Well, I guess this ends it for my occasional very long post - I've covered just about everything for the moment, and I'm rather tired. Maybe I'll actually post a little more often this year.

A belated Merry Christmas to all, and Happy New Year!

I found a fix for my issues in Firefox for Mac - the MightyMouse wants to scroll back and forth through the pages if the wheel moves left to right (horizontally) and found this link that explains how to fix it.

NaNoWriMo

For those of you who write, or for those of you who don't and are going to attempt NaNoWriMo, how do you come up with a plot for a story? I'm trying to think of one myself, but whenever I do, the ideas that pop up in my mind are basically from books that I have already read - and I don't want to "write" a story that already exists. Anyone have any advice? All is appreciated.

Ok, I'm getting outdone by Adam now. He suddenly decided that LiveJournal was this great thing and now he is posting like crazy all over the place, and updating his own journal. I guess that means that I need to as well.

So here is what is going on in my life. September 24th, I'm getting married. In Canada, of course - to [livejournal.com profile] am_hollitz. This has been in the works for a while now, and actually, I don't think that I posted about it to my journal. I kinda just read my friends list and didn't do much else on LJ for quite some time. I don't know why, exactly. But now I'm in an update mode, so I'll take advantage of it.

Planning a wedding is easy enough, but it's the execution that is the issue. Rings, clothes, location, airline tickets, cheesecakes (see Adam's journal for more on that) and other stuff left to figure out before we go. On one hand, it dosen't seem like much, yet it is. Other than the whole issue with the rings, it's almost all taken care of. I won't bore you with that story, but it's been a pain and a half.

Another part of planning the wedding was what about the name change - when you get married, you change your name, right? Well, not always. But we decided to do so. We did lots of thinking, and played group the syllables with our last names - that didn't work very well. (Lingkow, anyone?) After much debate, and a change of mind (his) we ended up at Hollitz. This won't go in effect offiically, until all the legal work is done - which won't be until after the wedding - need to figure out how it all works with stuff like SS & bank accounts & bills and such.

In other news, work is busy as ever, and I survived the boss going on vacation and being the main person that everyone comes to with problems, plus I had a server go down at a client, which I spent 4 days at trying to keep it alive and then finally replacing the motherboard to make it stable again. Other than that, it went decently well.

Also, we needed to get a new laptop at work - and we also knew that we needed to become familiar with the Mac operating system. So we decided to get an iBook. Which I am now typing on. It will basically be my laptop, although everyone will use it at work. I also got one of the new Mighty Mouse to go with it, and today I picked up a full size keyboard as well. I'm really liking the Mac, and learning has been fun so far. I now just need to figure out how to print to my printer which is on a Windows box - its supposed to be easy to do, but it's not being easy right now. I've found some webpages on what to do, but it involves setting up Unix printing on my Windows box, amongst other things. Oh boy.

So that's about the sum of what's going on. Wedding, work, and computers.

Oh yeah. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - go see it - it's a really funny movie, I enjoyed it a lot.

There were more things that I wanted to post about, but over time I've forgotten them..shame. Maybe I will remember them soon.

I'll keep this short.

Shock.

Glad to hear that everyone is ok on my friends list, and my prayers for everyone else in London and their friends and family.

So this isn't the large update that I had been promising people long ago, but it's an update nonetheless.  So here is what is going on in my life.

Work seems to have done a complete turnaround.  Business has been booming lately, and it's amazing how busy we are - we even had to hire someone part time because Dave and I just can't keep up with everything.  We just got a new project for a tattoo parlor and we are going to computerize the hell out of the place - the owner is really interested in what he can do with computers.  For us, it's a new type of installation/design with how he wants to arrange things and what he wants to implement.  So far, it's been one interesting project to research so far.

Wedding plans - well, we are still working on the website, which we will eventually get up and running.  Invitations are mostly complete and should be going out shortly. Those have taken some time as they are being custom designed by Adam, in Photoshop.  Not the easiest thing to manage at times.  We have now made the reservations for the B&B, purchased the airplane tickets, and purchased the stones for the rings (it was cheaper to buy them seperately than to purchase them through the ring company themselves).  Next month we will buy the rings themselves, and send the stones up to be put in them.

I've also been adding to my concert list.  I have now seen Fleetwood Mac in concert twice ('97 & '04) and I recently saw Duran Duran when they came through recently.  This Sunday, I am going to see Stevie Nicks & Don Henley in concert.  Adam swears he is in Stevie overload, and just about wants to die.  However, he usually complains about the concerts I have him go to and then he goes on afterwards about how they were so good.  Whatever, I say. :)  Now if I can just catch Blondie in concert, I'll consider myself quite happy.  Of course, I would love to see other concerts, so we will see what 80's band comes back next!! Duran Duran says they are starting a new album in September, so there's another possible one!

I find weekends just don't seem to be long enough these days, yet the weeks also seem to go by decently fast.

In other news, I'm getting digital cable finally, and cable internet.  Out goes SBCYahoo, which sucks like a Hoover, and not in the  good way.

And that, is what is currently going on in my somewhat boring/interesting life.
